Guiding The Next Generation: What It Means to Raise Young Adults to Become More Human

What is it like to raise children in a world so different from the one I was raised in? As my children grow and we all shift into new roles, I am exploring growth across generations. From the purpose of education to answering tough questions with empathy and attention to each child’s unique gifts, I strive to raise children who can thrive in a world that refuses to sit still in a rapidly changing landscape. In today's blog and podcast episode, let’s explore the changes the next generation of children is facing when it comes to showing up in the world and help them leave an impact far beyond college degrees.

Guiding The Next Generation: What It Means to Raise Young Adults to become More Human

Questions that young adults are asking these days: Why am I doing this? What is the point of higher education? How do I know this is right for me?

Your Identity Matters

The season of life I find myself in has required a gradual shift in my own identity, just as my children are becoming the adults they are becoming. The questions that young adults are asking aren't rooted in rebellion but in awareness. The world they are stepping into is materially different than the one we grew up in. The debt, the job prospects, and the deeper purpose of life are things that matter deeply to this generation. We should explore these questions with curiosity and adjust our answers to meet them in this place.

The Changing Purpose of Education

Education is not about prestige, picking the perfect school, or checking a box to enter the real world.

It's about becoming.

Becoming someone who can think for himself. Someone who can analyze systems and understand people. Someone who can learn, unlearn, and adapt. Someone who can hold their value steady in a world that's constantly shifting around them. The purpose of education is to be immersed in different scenarios and environments in order to sharpen these skills and continually grow into the person you are becoming.

Who You Are Is Your Most Valuable Asset

We can offer the next generation an answer that fuels trust and feels grounded and useful as they step into this unpredictable world. The idea of perfection and straight A’s is a myth, and it drains joy from the world of education. The courses, speakers, and curriculum that are chosen should teach students to become more human. To empathize with other experiences, communicate effectively, and think creatively.

The degrees may get you in the door, but the value of who you are as a person will determine what you'll actually build once you're there.

Education is a lifelong endeavor, and the classroom is just a moment. Who you are and what you bring is where you will make a lasting impact.

It’s the season of becoming.

This season of helping the next generation launch into the world is filled with opportunities to learn how to guide without controlling, how to support them without scripting for them.

Our goal is to raise children who know how to remain a whole person in a world that is constantly trying to keep them fragmented.
