What do you do when everything you love is in motion at once? Amidst the changes of life and watching my children all grow up at differing stages of life in one season, I have been thinking about when or if there will ever be a year where things seem to calm down. I realized that the concept of balance is a myth and that a blending or alignment of life is how to stay present and grounded when life is constantly changing around you. Because the truth is that life is not a fixed point but a changing, transforming system that requires a different approach. Today on the blog & podcast, I am debunking the balance myth and sharing how to stay grounded and find alignment when life is in constant motion.
The Balance Myth:
Finding Alignment When Life is in Constant Motion
Balance is a myth. There is no fixed point in life.
Balance assumes there's a still, fixed point where all things sit level on the scale and if you’re just disciplined or organized enough you can find it and stay there.
But that's inaccurate. Life moves and requires ebbs and flows. You cannot balance a system that is constantly moving, as life does.
Alignment asks a better question.
Balance is asking if everything got an equal slice today. Alignment asks, “Am I pointed at the right things, and am I actually present to the one thing in front of me?”
Balance is about a scale, and alignment is about direction.
The job was never to hold the still point, but to be the steady hand while everything else around us moves. The world is in transition and mid-transformation right now, and we aren't imagining the speed or the feeling of failing when it feels like a lot.
We cannot steady a transforming world by stopping it.
We steady the world around us by becoming steady inside the motion. The steady hand is not the one who stops the motion but the one who does not lose themselves in it.
4 Moves To Find Alignment In Your Life
Anchor before you act. Before the week starts decide what stays fixed in your days, like family dinner or your daily walk, or reflective morning minutes. Pick 2-3 anchors and protect them.
Presence over perfection. Whoever is in front of you gets all of you. Don't divide your attention with devices or distraction.
Learn to let go on purpose. Allow your children to grow or people to move in and out of your life as needed by creating boundaries where needed. Letting go is not a failure; it's always the goal when it’s the right time.
Name what is ending while it’s still here. Bringing awareness (& acceptance) to the changes in your life by naming them will help you stay present and aligned as things constantly change around you.
We don't need everything to slow down; we just need to anchor ourselves so we can be the steady hand for ourselves and those we impact.
The obstacles do not block the path; they are the path.
